ACCESS-4FI

ACCESS-4FI – Automated Crop Classification and yield Estimation online ServiceS for Food Industry is funded by the European Space Agency. The project addresses the challenge of continuous monitoring and quantification of agricultural production, as seen from the perspective of different actors in the agriculture sector.

The main motivation behind the proposal to ESA was that Space-borne monitoring could address the known deficiencies in crop production: wastage of resources (e.g. excessive fertilisation) and linked environmental pollution as well as decrease in profitability and competitiveness. Specifically, ACCESS-4FI aims to define and deliver a set of novel tools in the area of automated crop recognition and yield prediction. Together, these tools will allow the considered actors, from individual farms to businesses and agencies operating on a regional level, to optimise their operations, reduce risks, and in turn they will have a smoothing effect on the volatile commodity markets.

ACCESS-4FI is executed in partnership with the Space Research Centre, Polish Academy of Sciences (SRC PAS), who has an extensive experience with crop classification and SAR data analysis, the latter critical for an early-season monitoring. SatAgro Sp. z oo is responsible for a range of project’s aspects, from describing stakeholder requirements and turning them into service specifications and business models, to building new tools, supported by SRC PAS, and integrating them in the SatAgro platform.
